Dennis Township celebrated Arbor Day a little early this year with a tree planting ceremony at both the Primary School on Hagan Road and the Elementary/Middle School on Academy.
Donated by the South Jersey Transportation Authority, the program is designed to help students appreciate the value of trees and the importance of Arbor Day.
Each year, the SJTA selects six school across southern New Jersey to receive a tree. This year, Dennis Township represents two of them.
“As the organization responsible for maintaining and operating the Atlantic City Expressway, we have a strong connection to the communities here in southern New Jersey and feel that we should promote good stewardship," says James Sullivan, Director of Operations.
He stresses that they work with schools because they believe environmental education and appreciation should start early in life.
Principal Jamie VanArtsdalen appreciates the donated trees and the beauty and teaching opportunities they will bring to the schools.
"This is a wonderful reminder that we are part of a larger community and that we can be proactive in taking care of our environment," VanArtsdalen explains.
