Union League The Boys to Men Club travelled to Union League National Golf Course to get a hands on experience of how a golf course operates and potential jobs this age group could have. Donald Strassner led a wonderful tour with help from employees in each field. First up was bag drop/caddy with Tim Becker who stressed the importance of first impressions, punctuality, and being personable. The kids practiced caddying as they carried golf bags filled with clubs and trekked through the first 2 holes of the golf course. We even climbed to the highest peak in the county at 80 feet above sea level! Up next we headed inside the club house with Shelly Holt, Jacob Hoffer, and Chef Chris who spoke of the importance of the food and entertainment portion of the golf course experience. After a brief tour through the kitchen, the group headed to maintenance and grounds crew where Patrick Haughey and Scott Bordner, accompanied by a wonderful border collie, spoke about the work to be done in this field. The students were all eyes and ears as they learned about the equipment used to maintain the course, grass seed used, and the process of irrigation. All in all, this was an excellent experience for our middle school students and look forward to working with Donald Strassner and the Union League Gold Course in the future! Thanks again!
